CCP should just put that whole project on the back-burner until later on. The mega battle on Eve Online late last month makes that perfectly clear to me. (Watch it speeded up with heavy rock accompaniment.) I didn't exactly enjoy Eve Online when I played it, but I have to admit that part of the reason I'm playing DUST 514 is to be part of that universe. After watching 4,000 players blow $500,000 on that awe-inspiring battle, the idea of 16 players taking a district and holding it without a fleet is just plain pathetic. DUST 514 has got to eventually be part of EVE, but not like this . . .

Well, I guess the point is that DUST 514 needs to be much more fully integrated into EVE before Planetary Conquest will make sense within the EVE universe. Somewhere in that integration is where the "supercool" PVE lies. When an EVE battle of such dimensions as the one last month has an impact in dozens of solar systems and worlds in DUST 514, then we will actually start to feel a part of it. Because right now, we just don't give a damn for the most part about what happens in EVE. EVE players need to somehow participate in the decision of when to take a planet with the contracting of DUSTY Mercs, and the operations should usually be larger than the current pathetically tiny 16-vs-16 games. If and when they manage to integrate everything realistically, it will be EPIC. So, they should forget PC until they're ready to implement it fully in future with 2,000-player mega battles, for instance. They should instead start out with the Drone infestation stuff for their PVE (and perhaps other smaller solo missions like in so many video games such as Red Faction, Borderlands, etc.) This should be done on just a few "wilder problem" planets (which must be tamed) to start out with if they decide to do it. Eve Online has such missions. Why not DUST 514?
I actually don't want to create their game for them. I think they can do a better job of it if they actually believe in DUST 514 and don't give up on it. I just think that what they've currently got is simply pathetic.
Another thing that I think is ridiculous in orbital bombardments. What? Planets in EVE don't have planetary defenses against lone wolf spaceships dropping rocks on planets? With all the super-mega-advanced technology in EVE, they're actually convinced that that makes sense? The MegaSpace battle in EVE last month was started over an invoice somebody decided not to pay, but planets change hands without any complaints at all? Bah! That's a huge plothole in this story! They've got to fix it. |
